UNIJOS Position On Allegation of Possession of Arms By a Student

Management of the University of Jos has dissociated itself from reports that a Student of the University was found to be in possession of a firearm which was used to confront security personnel that were deployed to restore law and order within the University hostel premises.

Some reports in the media had indicated that the Acting Chief Security Officer of the University had claimed that a Student at the University’s Village Hostel who was armed with a locally made pistol, shot at a security personnel in retaliation to the shooting of another student who was hit by a stray bullet.

Management of the University wishes to state that following investigations into the matter, the University was unable to establish the veracity of such claims and therefore regards it as an unsubstantiated statement from someone who was not authorized to speak on behalf of the University Management.

Management advises members of the public to disregard any insinuation that students of the University were an aggressive party in the unrest that ensued but were rather innocent victims of a situation that took them unawares.

Management would however, wish to reiterate that adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure that the University of Jos is safe for all its staff and students.
