ALL is now set for the third edition of the
Tombim and Dayat Tennis Classics scheduled to take place in Abuja from May 1st to 21st.
At a pre- tournament media briefing yesterday, tournament director Ikani Agabi some of the best upcoming players from 25 countries are expected to be at the tournament which he added has been sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
He further revealed that the championship which is exclusively for boys has a prize money of $75,000 dollars to be spread across the winners
of the various singles and doubles categories.
Agabi added that the tournament will afford some Nigerian upcoming players the opportunity to compete with their peers from other parts of the world including Europe and America.
“This tournament is very important because it boasts of 35 ATP points and a winner of all three legs who has not been ranked will automatically be ranked among the best 500 in the world.
“Interestingly, hosting this event in Nigeria will make it possible for those who would not have had the opportunity of travelling outside the country to participate and to have that same experience. Already apart from the boys who will be participating from home, there are five others coming from Brazil and the USA.”
Also speaking at the briefing, president of the Nigerian Tennis Federation (NTF), Engr.Sani Ndanusa said the tournament is even beyond tennis because it is taking Nigeria to the rest of the world.
The former minister for sports further said spending about three weeks in Nigeria will equally prove to the world that the country is peaceful and investment friendly.
He praised the sponsors, Tombim and Dayat for keeping fate in sponsoring the championship despite the economic situation in the country.
Players are from countries including; America, UK, Brazil, Togo, Mexico, Australia, Egypt, China, Canada, Nigeria amongst others.
