The NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY ASUU branch embarked on an indefinite strike on the 28th of APRIL due to the failure of the Bayelsa State Government in the payment of staff salary. Though the strike just started and for now has no ending date, We believe that the strike might not be ending soon. Read the reasons below.
1. ASUU STRIKE DOESN’T END QUICKLY
.
When it comes to Universities strike in Nigeria and you hear ASUU, the first thing that comes to your mind is you will be at home for Months or maybe years. Unlike strikes that enhances from inter school problems and riot, ASUU does not put an end to their strike unless their issues are properly solved and their demands granted. Take the 2013 ASUU strike for example.
2. STATE UNIVERSITY.
NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY is a State University and so its activities are handled by the Bayelsa State Government. Much Attention will not be given to this strike nationally, if it were a Federal Government University, Federal Government will be involved and if Federal Government is involved, there will be fast action to end the strike. Take IMSU for instance, they too are currently on strike for almost two months for the same reason.
3. BAD ECONOMY.
Lets face the fact, the country is broke, States account are dry and Bayelsa state is not left out. We all know how people of Bayelsa state are suffering because of the economic downfall. Apart from lectures and the school’s general staff, Bayelsa state workers in general have been deprived of salary and the one paid is either for previous months or incomplete. According to disclosed sources, the lecturers vowed not to resume until their 4months payment is paid in full. Checking the way the economy of the state is, meeting to the demands of the Lectures and staff will be very I mean very difficult for the State Government.
4. SERIOUSNESS OF THE STRIKE.
